What is magnesium?

Magnesium is an alkali-earth metal, it has atomic number 12 and its symbol is Mg.

It is an essential mineral that is particularly abundant in our body and is necessary for its proper functioning; in fact, it is involved in hundreds of enzymatic reactions.

Why take magnesium? What are its properties?

Magnesium plays a vital role in nerve transmission and muscle contraction.

Magnesium is particularly useful in situations of stress. Indeed, there is a vicious cycle between stress and magnesium (to simplify):

  • Magnesium deficiency impairs stress management
  • Stress increases magnesium loss
  • Etc.

The recommended daily intake of magnesium is:

  • 360 mg/day in women
  • 420 mg/day in men.

Studies show that approximately one-quarter of the population receives less than two-thirds of the recommended daily intake. In these cases, magnesium supplementation becomes particularly beneficial.

Which magnesium supplement should I choose?

There are many magnesium-containing dietary supplements on the market. It's not always easy for consumers to know which one to choose.

Many supplements use magnesium oxides (marine magnesium, etc.). While these supplements do contain magnesium, their main drawback is the very low bioavailability of this form, which leads to poor absorption and results in the laxative effect (which may be desirable) of magnesium supplements.

Supplements with low bioavailability are therefore more suitable for use in order to accelerate intestinal transit but not for nutritional magnesium intake.

There are now more advanced (and more expensive) "forms" of magnesium that can be classified according to their bioavailability (from highest to lowest):

  1. Magnesium bisglycinate
  2. Magnesium citrate
  3. Magnesium aspartate
  4. Magnesium lactate
  5. magnesium glycerophosphate
  6. Magnesium chloride
  7. Magnesium pidolate
  8. Magnesium gluconate
  9. Magnesium oxide
  10. Magnesium hydroxide
  11. Magnesium carbonate

The least bioavailable forms of magnesium will be poorly absorbed by the body and will lead to side effects such as diarrhea.

At Phytocea we have chosen to use one of the best magnesiums available on the market and therefore use magnesium bisglycinate , a premium magnesium, certainly more expensive, but effective!

What are the health claims of magnesium?

Magnesium is essential and benefits from health claims validated by the EFSA. Magnesium contributes to:

  • to a normal energy metabolism,
  • to the normal functioning of the nervous system,
  • to normal muscle function,
  • to normal protein synthesis,
  • to normal psychological functions,
  • to the maintenance of normal bones and teeth.

And what about Phytocea?

At Phytocea , we created ReCharge , a food supplement specially formulated to meet your magnesium needs. It combines two forms of magnesium, selected for their complementary properties and effectiveness: magnesium pidolate and magnesium glycerophosphate . These forms of magnesium are very well absorbed by the body (unlike magnesium oxides and other marine magnesium) and therefore do not have any adverse gastrointestinal effects.
