Ingredient information: Coenzyme Q10
What is coenzyme Q10 (or CoQ10)?
Coenzyme Q10 belongs to the ubiquinone family (1,4-Benzoquinone or 2,3-dimethoxy-5-methyl-6-decaprenylbenzoquinone).
It is the main ubiquinone in mammals, it plays a crucial role in energy supply by intervening in the mitochondrial respiratory chain.
What are the properties of coenzyme Q10?
The coenzyme is a ubiquinone and therefore belongs to the quinone family, like vitamin K. Like it, CoQ10 is fat-soluble.
CoQ10 is essential for the functioning of the respiratory chain (in the mitochondria) and therefore for the supply of ATP (energy supply).
It is an antioxidant, it is generally used to help treat heart failure (it is considered a medicine in some countries).
It is not considered an essential nutrient because the body is able to synthesize it.
Food is a source of CoQ10, but the richest foods are animal products, so there is a risk of limited intake for vegans and vegetarians.
Coenzyme Q10 levels decrease with age , which is why it is frequently used to try to prevent the effects of aging.
Furthermore, it has been observed that people treated with lipid-lowering treatments, such as statins, have a decrease in their co-enzyme Q10 levels; in these people, CoQ10 supplementation is often recommended.
What are the health claims of coenzyme Q10?
Coenzyme Q10 is used as a medicine in some countries (Japan, Israel,...).
In Europe, the EFSA has not validated any health claims relating to coenzyme Q10 since it is not considered essential.
Coenzyme Q10 at Phytocea
At Phytocea , for its antioxidant and protective effects on the retina, but also to compensate for levels that decrease with age, we have chosen to incorporate coenzyme Q10 into the ORetine formula.
ORetine is a vision food supplement, extremely comprehensive, one of whose objectives is the maintenance of visual function and the prevention of certain pathologies such as AMD or cataracts.
