What is blackcurrant?
Blackcurrant ( Ribes nigrum ) is a European shrub of the Grossulariaceae family.
It is frequently used in herbal medicine. Either the fruit or the leaves are used.
What are the properties and benefits of blackcurrant?
It is used in food and herbal medicine. It contains, among other things, anthocyanins , flavonoids , and proanthocyanidins . These compounds give it anti-inflammatory properties, hence its use in relieving rheumatism.
It is believed to have venotonic properties, which is why it is frequently used to treat the symptoms of venous insufficiency. These effects are thought to be due to the anthocyanins present in the fruit.

Health authorities (EMA and ESCOP) recognize the traditional use of blackcurrant:
- as complementary treatment in rheumatic conditions
- for its diuretic effect
- for the relief of diarrhea
