Ingredient information: Glucosamine
What is glucosamine?
Glucosamine is a derivative of glucose, which participates in the glycosylation of proteins and lipids.
It is a normal component of the polysaccharide chain of the cartilage matrix and of the glycosaminoglycans of the synovial fluid.
Studies In vitro and in vivo studies have shown that glucosamine stimulates the synthesis of:
- proteoglycans
- glycosaminoglycans by chondrocytes
- hyaluronic acid by the synoviocytes
It is therefore one of the components of cartilage with some effectiveness in supplementation, it is regularly used in the treatment of rheumatism, particularly that which affects the knees.
What are the properties of glucosamine?
Its action is thought to occur via the synovial fluid . Clinical studies are not always clear regarding its effectiveness; however, glucosamine is used as a medication in several countries.
It is available for sale without a prescription in France, but its use requires some precautions.
What are the health claims of glucosamine?
EFSA has not validated the claims of glucosamine (relating to inflammation, immune system, cartilage destruction and joint mobility) concerning food supplements (but not for medicines).
