What is bromelain?
Bromelain, also called bromelin or bromelase , is a group of enzymes found in pineapple ( Ananas comosus ). It can be extracted directly from the fruit or its stem.
It is used in medicine and herbal medicine.
What are the properties of bromelain?
Bromelain has a wide range of uses:
- pharmaceutical industry
- food industry
- textile industry
- cosmetics industry
This enzyme complex's main property is to digest proteins (it is a cysteine protease). As such, it is often used traditionally to aid digestion. It has also been credited with weight-loss and cellulite-reducing properties, etc., but these claims have been rejected by health authorities.
On the other hand, it has been shown that bromelain has the ability to reduce edema and helps to relieve menstrual pain through a relaxing effect on the cervix.
What are the health claims of bromelain?
To date, there are no validated health claims for bromelain and pineapple.
However, some claims have been rejected by health authorities; foods containing bromelain cannot claim to be:
- reduce the feeling of heavy legs
- to improve circulation in small blood vessels
- or increase blood fluidity
- prevent or relieve indigestion and gastrointestinal discomfort; improve food digestion
- help maintain the effectiveness of the immune system
- help lose weight
- maintain an optimal weight
- fight against cellulite
