Ingredient information: Selenium
What is selenium?
Selenium (atomic number 34), whose symbol is Se, is a trace element and essential for certain proteins.
At Phytocea , we use selenium in our supplement designed to support thyroid function: Thyro
What are the properties and benefits of selenium?
It possesses antioxidant properties and is an integral part of the selenoproteins, among which are the iconic:
- glutathione peroxidases
- Iodothyronine deiodinases (essential for the synthesis of thyroid hormones)
- thioredoxin reductases
It is credited with many properties, some well demonstrated and others for which the evidence needs to be strengthened.
Applications include dermatology, heavy metal chelation, cancer prevention (real benefit poorly demonstrated), cardiovascular support, etc.
Its main benefit lies in its antioxidant effect.
The recommended daily intake of selenium is 55µg.
What are the health claims about selenium?
The EFSA authorizes claims on products containing selenium. These products must contain at least 8.25 micrograms of selenium per 100 g, 100 ml, or per serving and may claim to contribute to:
- to normal sperm production
- to maintain normal hair and nails
- to the normal functioning of the immune system
- to the protection of cells against free radicals
- to the normal functioning of the thyroid
What are the side effects and contraindications of selenium?
Selenium is toxic in high doses, so it is essential to respect the recommended doses.
Selenium supplements, especially high doses, may interact with certain medications:
- cancer treatments, particularly those with an oxidizing effect ( radiotherapy, cyclophosphamides, dacarbazine, platinum analogues, anthracyclines, bleomycin, mitomycin)
- certain cholesterol-lowering treatments
- certain anticoagulants
Use is not recommended without medical advice in these cases.
Selenium is essential for the thyroid, but anyone undergoing thyroid treatment should consult their doctor before taking selenium supplements.
Selenium at Phytocea
At Phytocea , due to its role in the synthesis of thyroid hormones and its antioxidant activity, we have chosen to incorporate selenium into the Thyro formula.
Thyro is a nutraceutical food supplement specifically for the thyroid; it is designed to support thyroid function by providing all the nutrients important for the synthesis of thyroid hormones.
