What are the properties of oats?
Oats do not contain gluten. However, they do contain avenin, which can also trigger sensitivities in some people with symptoms similar to those of gluten intolerance.
Oats are used in herbal medicine for their effects in regulating cholesterol and blood sugar levels.
Oats contain a number of compounds of interest such as:
- avenacosides
- flavonoids
- nutrients including vitamins and fiber
Oats are used for their fiber content to reduce LDL, normalize intestinal transit and for mild sleep disorders.
What are the health claims about oats?
Oats have health claims validated by the EFSA, relating to the reduction of postprandial blood glucose and the maintenance of cholesterol levels. The required doses are several grams per day.
The uses in herbal medicine are recognised by the EMA and Commission E.
