What is hawthorn?
Hawthorn or crataegus is a small tree belonging to the rose family.
It is widely used in herbal medicine to treat mild sleep disorders, nervousness, and palpitations.
It has demonstrated effects in the management of mild cardiac disorders (arrhythmias, moderate heart failure).
What are the properties of hawthorn?
Hawthorn contains several bioactive molecules:
- proanthocyanidins
- flavonoids such as rutin.
These molecules have been clinically shown to have a positive effect on the heart:
- strengthening of contractions
- normalization of the rhythm
- improvement of coronary circulation
What are the health claims of hawthorn?
There are currently no health claims validated by the EFSA.
However, the traditionally established uses of hawthorn for heart rhythm disorders and nervousness are recognized by the European Medicines Agency (EMA), the World Health Organization (WHO), Commission E and ESCOP.
What are the contraindications and side effects of using hawthorn?
There do not appear to be any side effects or contraindications to the use of hawthorn.
