What is vitamin E?

Vitamin E is a generic term that refers to tocopherols and tocotrienols. The most commonly found is alpha-tocopherol, which is the most active of the tocopherols.

What are the properties of vitamin E?

These are fat-soluble vitamins (which dissolve in fats), not very sensitive to heat but very sensitive to oxidation.

Its main property is its antioxidant action, which is of interest in protecting against lipid peroxidation.

Rare vitamin E deficiency causes neurological symptoms and is observed in patients with cholestatic liver disease, severe malnutrition, lipid malabsorption disorders, and cystic fibrosis.

The deficiency may possibly be observed in people taking medication that inhibits lipid absorption (e.g., Xenical).

It is found mainly in vegetable oils and nuts.

The recommended intake for adults is 10 mg/day (10 IU) for men and 9 mg/day (9 IU) for women.

Vitamin E is used in the prevention of cardiovascular disease, osteoarthritis, and age-related eye conditions (cataracts, AMD). It has been used successfully in AREDS studies.

What are the health claims of vitamin E?

EFSA authorises the use of health claims for products containing vitamin E.

They must provide a minimum of 1.8mg of vitamin E per 100g, 100ml or per serving.

Products meeting these criteria can claim to contribute to the protection of cells against free radicals.

What are the side effects and contraindications of vitamin E?

Vitamin E is not recommended when taking anticoagulants.

Pregnant or breastfeeding women should not consume food supplements containing vitamin E.

The continuous intake of highly dosed dietary supplements (some supplements on the market use very high doses, up to 60 times the RDA), beyond the RDA, is not recommended and:

  • may increase the risk of developing a stroke
  • increase the risk of prostate cancer (associated with selenium intake)
  • increase the risk of high blood pressure

Taking high doses of vitamin E can also lead to:

  • fatigue
  • digestive problems
  • breast pain
  • emotional disturbances
