Ingredient sheet: Tyrosine
What is tyrosine?
Tyrosine is a non-essential amino acid, obtained through diet but which the body is also able to synthesize from phenylalanine.
Its presence is necessary in the synthesis of various molecules such as:
- catecholamines (adrenaline, noradrenaline, dopamine, DOPA)
- melanin
- thyroid hormones
It is mainly found in products of animal origin. As an interesting side note, the crystals observed on aged cheeses such as Comté, Parmesan, Grana Padano, or Mimolette are not salt crystals but tyrosine crystals.
Tyrosine is used as a precursor to the aforementioned molecules (to ensure its presence in sufficient quantities), it has also shown some effectiveness in the management of attention disorders.
It is not recommended for people suffering from Parkinson's disease.
People with thyroid disease should seek medical advice before use.
What are the properties of tyrosine?
Tyrosine participates in the synthesis of catecholamines, it also has an antioxidant action.
The daily requirement for tyrosine is 1 to 2g.
Tyrosine dietary supplements are used to contribute to mental alertness.
Contraindications and side effects of tyrosine?
There is no general contraindication to taking L-tyrosine.
However, it is not recommended for people suffering from Parkinson's disease.
People with thyroid disease should consult a doctor before use.
What are the health claims of tyrosine?
Tyrosine is not an essential amino acid since it can be synthesized by the body from phenylalanine (an essential amino acid), so the EFSA has not yet granted any health claims to Tyrosine.
Tyrosine and Phytocea
At Phytocea , we have chosen to incorporate tyrosine into our Thyro.
Thyro is a nutraceutical food supplement designed to support thyroid health. We include a small amount of tyrosine (250mg) in it because tyrosine is a precursor to thyroid hormones, the proper synthesis of which Thyro aims to promote.
