Meadowsweet ( Filipendula ulmaria ) or meadowsweet is a herbaceous plant of the Rosaceae family.
It contains salicylic acid, which gives it its properties. It is listed in category A of the French pharmacopoeia .
It is used in herbal medicine, thanks to its anti-inflammatory , analgesic and antipyretic properties, in order to relieve minor joint pain.
What are the properties and benefits of meadowsweet?
Meadowsweet is widely used in herbal medicine.
It has pain-relieving, anti-inflammatory, antispasmodic and diuretic effects.
It is traditionally used to relieve rheumatic attacks, dental pain, and muscle aches and pains.
It contains several active ingredients such as, for example:
- salicylic acid
- glucosides,
- flavonoids
- tannins
- antioxidants.
Salicylic acid is responsible for many of its effects (the active ingredient in aspirin is a derivative of salicylic acid).
What are the health claims made about meadowsweet?
The European Medicines Agency (EMA) recognizes the traditional use of meadowsweet for joint pain and colds.
