Ingredient information: phosphatidylserine in food supplements
There are many phosphatidylserine-based dietary supplements on the market. What is phosphatidylserine? What are the benefits of taking it?
What is phosphatidylserine?
Phosphatidylserine is an essential component of cell membranes. It is a phospholipid present in very high quantities in the brain, hence its name "cephalin." It has been studied for its effects on memory. It is because of its role in the brain that it is found in dietary supplements.
What is a phospholipid?
Phospholipids are assemblies of fatty acids, glycerol, and phosphatidic acid. They are amphiphilic molecules (they have both hydrophilic and hydrophobic parts). Phospholipids, such as phosphatidylserine, are constituents of cell membranes and give them their structural properties, including membrane fluidity.
What is the purpose of phosphatidylserine?
Phosphatidylserine is an essential component of brain cell membranes. More precisely, it is the most abundant phospholipid in the brain and is particularly important for cognitive functions because it contributes to the functional properties of neurons through the structural properties of their membranes.
Phosphatidylserine can be synthesized by the body, therefore it is not considered an essential nutrient whose dietary intake is crucial.
As a reminder, an essential nutrient MUST be provided through food because the body is not able to synthesize it.
However, in certain situations, including aging, phosphatidylserine synthesis may be impaired, leading to a decline in brain function, particularly memory loss. Phosphatidylserine is used in dietary supplements to address these issues. Some effects have been demonstrated in clinical studies, but it should be noted that these studies are relatively few in number.
What are the health claims of phosphatidylserine?
Health claims related to phosphatidylserine were reviewed by the EFSA. At the time of the review, the EFSA did not consider the evidence sufficient to authorize specific claims for phosphatidylserine. Conversely, in the United States, even though the scientific evidence is considered limited, the FDA (which regulates health claims) authorized the claim: "Consumption of phosphatidylserine may reduce the risk of dementia and cognitive impairment in older adults."
Phosphatidylserine in Phytocea food supplements
At Phytocea , in order to ensure a sufficient intake of phosphatidylserine, we have incorporated phosphatidylserine into our ReMind food supplement.
ReMind is a dietary supplement designed to support memory and cognitive abilities. ReMind is a nootropic stack containing vitamins, magnesium, physiologically relevant substances (Phosphatidylserine, Alpha Lipoic Acid), and high-quality standardized plant extracts: Bacopa Monnieri and Ginkgo Biloba.
