Ingredient information: cystine in dietary supplements
Like cysteine , cystine is frequently found in dietary supplements. What is it? What are its benefits? Are there any contraindications or precautions for use?
What is cystine?
Its name is reminiscent of cysteine, and for good reason. Cystine is a compound of two cysteine monomers. Cysteine is a sulfur-containing amino acid; in cystine, two cysteines are linked by a disulfide bridge.
Because it is derived from cysteine and therefore methionine, and because the body can synthesize it, cystine is not considered an essential nutrient. However, if the intake of precursors is insufficient, and under certain conditions, particularly aging, the amount of cystine can become inadequate. Cystine is found in the keratin of hair, nails, and skin.
What are the benefits of cystine?
Cystine is generally consumed in combination with vitamin B6 to improve the condition of the skin, nails and hair growth; it also has ocular applications.
Cystine is particularly used for the care of brittle hair and nails and for corneal healing.
What are the health claims for cystine?
There is no health claim validated by the EFSA for cysteine.
In which foods is cystine found?
Cystine is found in food. There is no recommended daily intake for this nutrient.
Cystine is found in a wide variety of foods, and more specifically:
-
Mustard seeds
-
Animal products, and particularly avocados
-
Baker's yeast
-
Nuts
-
Sunflower seeds
-
Sesame
-
the cashew nut.
What are the precautions for use and the side effects of cystine?
An excess of cystine can be responsible for halitosis (bad breath) and may contribute to the formation of kidney stones in people who suffer from cystinuria.
The consumption of cystine in the form of a food supplement is not recommended for pregnant or breastfeeding women; in these cases, the advice of a doctor is necessary.
