Ingredient sheet: CDP-choline (citicoline)
What is CDP-choline (citicoline)?
CDP-Choline , also known as Citicoline or cytidine-disphosphate-choline, is a molecule present in the body. It is derived from choline and is a component in the synthesis pathway of phosphatidylcholines, a class of phospholipids.
It is used for its role in maintaining neuronal function, particularly through its role in the synthesis of phospholipids that make up cell membranes. It is notably a nootropic.
What are the properties of CDP-Choline?
Its main property is that it is a precursor to the synthesis of phospholipids, molecules essential to cell membranes. These phospholipids, such as phosphatidylcholine, phosphatidylserine, and phosphatidylethanolamine, are crucial for the membrane properties of neurons.
Dietary intake of citicoline has the advantage of being absorbed during digestion in the form of choline and uridine; these two compounds are subsequently reused directly by the body for the resynthesis of citicoline and phospholipids.
What are the health claims for citicoline?
EFSA authorises products containing choline (one of the constituents of citicoline), if they contain at least 82.5mg of choline per 100g, 100ml or per serving, to use the following claims:
- contribution to metabolism normal homocysteine and lipid levels
- contribution to liver function
What are the contraindications and side effects of taking CDP-Choline?
There are few special precautions to take when taking CDP-choline:
Taking choline, and therefore cd-choline, is not recommended in cases of depression or Parkinson's disease.
What is the use of CDP-Choline in Phytocea?
At Phytocea , we use CDP-choline in ORetine , our food supplement specifically designed for vision . ORetine is a superb nutraceutical supplement that provides what's needed for optimal eye and neuron function; it's with this in mind that we decided to use CDP-choline in the formula.
